Long-term travel has its merits, but there are moments when you crave the rejuvenation of a weekend getaway. A short overnight trip can revitalize your life, refreshing both body and mind, allowing you to experience the benefits of travel in a condensed timframe.
A variety of Weekend Getaways around New York and New Jersey
I recommend Getaway House, Newport in Rhode Island, Boston, and Pocono as destinations for overnight trips.
1. Getaway House in Upstate New York and Connecticut
Getaway House, which has recently gained popularity, offers small cabins converted from campervans within a two-hour drive from approximately 30 cities in the United States.
Each tiny cabin is equipped with everything you need to enjoy nature and camping. Inside, you'll find a bed, kitchen, refrigerator, toilet, shower, kitchenware, air conditioner, and heater. Outside, there is space for a campfire, along with an outdoor table and chairs.
The highlight of the Getaway House is the famous huge floor-to-ceiling window that fills one side of the wall. It provided me with a sense of serenity and connection to nature while lying in bed.
I went to the Getaway House with my partner. Time will pass quickly as you explore the hiking tails near the Getaway House, prepare simple camping meals, make s'mores over a campfire, and immerse yourself in nature. I think this experience can be particularly romantic for couples.
Currently, Getaway House offers three locations near New York and New Jersey: the Eastern and Western Catskills in upstate New York, and Machimoodus in Connecticut. All are within a 2-3 hour drive, allowing you to choose the most convenient option. Having visited all of them, I personally recommend Machimoodus. It was the most recently built location, offering clean and well-maintained facilities.
After checking out the Getaway House in Connecticut, we enjoyed a boat tour on the Connecticut River and indulged in the very famous white clam pizza in New Haven.

2. Newport, Rhode Island
It takes about three and a half hours to drive from New York City to Newport, Rhode Island. Newport is renowned for its magnificent luxury mansions built by tycoons, showcasing the opulence of 19th-century American wealth. It is also famous for its breathtaking ocean views.
I believe that the mansion tours are the highlight of a trip to Newport. While the entrance fees to these mansions may seem a little expensive($25-$29 for one mansion, $38 for two), I highly recommend exploring all if you have time. However, at least, visit the Breakers, built by the Vanderbilt family, and learn about the fascinating history behind it. Each mansion offers a unique glimpse into the lavish lifestyles of America's elite during the Gilded Age. Click below for more information.
During my visit, I toured two mansions: The Breakers and Marble House. They offer pamphlets and audio guides in multiple languages, which enhance the tour's convenience. The entire tour would take about 1.5-2 hours, and they close at 4:00 pm, so get there before 2:30 pm.
When visiting Newport, make sure to explore the splendid 19th-century architecture and take a stroll along the picturesque Cliff Walk by the beach. I particularly enjoyed walking along the Cliff Walk adjacent to The Breakers, feeling the invigorating sea breeze. It was truly magnificent.
Additionally, don't miss the opportunity to indulge in delicious lobster rolls and oysters at one of the restaurants near Thames street. After your meal, I suggest taking a drive along Ocean Drive, a 10-mile route that offers breathtaking views of the coastline and allows you to immerse yourself in Newport's natural beauty. During sunset, it offers the most romantic atmosphere.

3. Boston
It takes about four hours to drive from New York City to Boston. In Boston, there are numerous attractions to explore, such as the Freedom Trail, Ivy League universities, the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, the Boston Red Sox Ballpark, and the Samuel Adams Brewery.
As you walk through downtown Boston, you'll encounter a line of red stones carved into the ground known as the Freedom Trail. Beginning at Boston Common, this trail leads you past various historical sites and downtown commercial centers associated with the American Colonial Era and the Revolutionary War.
Don't miss the opportunity to try Boston's famous clam chowder and lobster rolls at Quicy Market, the final stop of the Freedom Trail. You can immerse yourself in the atmosphere of prestigious American Ivy League universities by visiting Harvard University and MIT in Cambridge.
The Boston Musueum of Fine Arts boasts an impressive collection of works by famous impressionist artists such as Monet, Degas, Renoir, and Gauguin. Take your time to admire these masterpieces and explore the museum's diverse exhibitions.
Moreover, I recommend taking the subway to experience Boston's iconic brewery, Samuel Adams, where I indulged in some truly refreshing and delicious beers. I took a guided tour to learn about the brewing process and the history behind Samuel Adams' renowned craft beers. The tour was both educational and enjoyable and I particularly relished the tasting session.
4. Pocono, Pennsylvania
Pocono, Pennsylvania, is only an hour and a half to two hours' drive from New York and New Jersey, making it a popular destination for families and friends seeking quick getaways.
Many people opt to rent small cabins or entire homes through Airbnb near the Pocono Mountains. The Pocono region offers a diverse range of seasonal outdoor activities, including hiking, rafting, kayaking, skiing, sledding, and ziplining.
Last summer, I hiked the Kittany Point trail near Delaware Water Gap. The climbing course proved to be somewhat steep and challenging, but it was not difficut. After a couple hours of struggle, I finally reached the summit of the mountain and gazed at the view below. The beautiful S-shaped view of the Delaware River was truly magnificent. In that moment, I realized the true joy of hiking. Even my husband, who had complained about the difficulty on the way up, found himself appreciating the experience.
